  1. Voo de Mar says:
    Points won by each set: [ 48-45, 36-27, 35-27 ]
    Points won directly on serve:
    34 % Sampras – 38 of 109
    26 % Martin – 29 of 109

Just the 3rd of their 22 meetings. Sampras [1] saved six break points in two different games of the 1st set, including 0/40 at 3-all. Martin [12] had won six straight tie-breaks in his three previous matches. Another two sets were almost identical – Sampras built a two-break cushion (4:1 and 5:1) before losing his serve, but had no problems to serve the sets out at 5:4. “I respected his returns and passes, so I stayed back. I just wanted to out-rally him,” Sampras said. “I felt I could compete with him from the baseline.” Sampras had won Wimbledon & US Open ’93 so with the Aussie Open ’94 title he put himself in a position to win a non-calendar Slam, but Courier stopped him in Paris.

Sampras’ route to his 23rd title:
    1 Joshua Eagle 6-4, 6-0, 7-6(5)
    2 Yevgeny Kafelnikov 6-3, 2-6, 6-3, 1-6, 9-7
    3 Stephane Simian 7-5, 6-1, 1-6, 6-4
    4 Ivan Lendl 7-6(5), 6-2, 7-6(4)
    Q Magnus Gustafsson 7-6(4), 2-6, 6-3, 7-6(4)
    S Jim Courier 6-3, 6-4, 6-4
    W Todd Martin 7-6(4), 6-4, 6-4

    # Two points away from losing in the second round to the relatively unknown Russian then.
