When we look at doubles finals year by year (Masters finals), the achievement of John McEnroe and Peter Fleming looks impressive – seven straight titles in the years 1978-84, however, in the years 1976-81 the doubles ‘Masters’ was consisted only of four pairs (six pairs in the following three editions, nevertheless the winning team also won just two matches grabbing the title). There’s no doubt Fleming/McEnroe created a magnificent team in the 70’s and 80’s (seven major titles) but I’m prone to consider the WTC Masters Doubles (WCT-Masters finals) as a more important ‘Masters’ in a span of 10 years between the mid -70’s and the mid -80’s. There were always gathered the best pairs in men’s tennis and in majority of editions of the event, “the best of five” matches were required (years 1973-78 in the play-off formula, afterwards the ’round robin’ system). Therefore I think it’s good to include results of that event to the page… In 1986 there were two “Masters” in doubles with strong field and a challenging formula – all “the best of five” encounters). It’s a unique year for ‘Masters’ in general, because that year also two singles ‘Masters’ were held in New York (January and December) 🙂
