“Year End Championships” or “Masters” it’s a tournament, in which usually participated the eight best players of a season, every year since 1970. The tournament has changed its official name four times: 1970-89: Masters Grand Prix, 1990-99: ATP Tour World Championships, 2000-08: Tennis Masters Cup, 2009-15: ATP World Tour Finals. In the years 1977-1985 the tournament was held at the beginning of the season, this led to funny situation of two “Masters” tournaments played in 1986, both finals that year were won by Ivan Lendl, who ousted in straight sets Boris Becker on both occasions (in January and December)! There were five changes of the tournament formula: 1970: 6 participants, each plays against each other (tie-breaks at 5:5!) 1971: 7 participants, each plays against each other 1982-84: 12 participants, top 4 seeded guys with a first round “bye” 1985: 16 players 1972-81 & 1986-14: the “round robin” system with 8 players
