Points won by each set: [ 33-22, 52-47 ]
Points won directly on serve:
23 % Calleri – 17 of 71
25 % Agassi – 21 of 83

For the first 50 minutes (up to 3:1 for Calleri in the 2nd set) it was an unbelievable performance of the underdog. He was spreading powerful shots all over the place and led in winners (not counting aces) 23:1!! I’ve never seen Agassi [5] being so hopeless for such a long time. Yet the Argentinian [21] throughout his career had problems to close out the matches and it could turn into his many tight defeats. Agassi came back from a break down twice and had five set points in one game starting from 5:4 (40/15):
– he sent long Calleri’s second serve; FH winner; forced error with powerful FH; BH winner & BH error
Agassi was two points away from the set at 6:5, but Calleri managed to get 9 of the last 11 points with very good serving (half of his aces then)
Calleri also saved five set points defeating Ferrero 6-4, 7-5, 6-1 in the Davis Cup semifinal a few months earlier.
