  1. Voo de Mar says:
Stats without the first four games of the 2nd set; number of aces, double faults & break points valid for the entire contest

    Points won by each set: | 41-40, X, 41-34 |

When a teenage Sampras ousted Lendl at the US Open ’90 in five sets, it was a big upset, but more than three years later in Melbourne, people rather didn’t expect that the icon of the 80s – Lendl – would be able to play two tie-breaks (lost them 5/7 and 4/7) against the player who replaced him as a leader of another decade. Lendl’s advancement to the fourth round wasn’t anticipated because in 1993 he won only 1 out of his 5 major matches. The 34-year-old Czechoslovak [17], but American citizen for two years, speaking to himself in English, led with a break in both tie-break sets: 3:2 in the opener, 4:1 in the final set. At 5-all in the 1st set tie-break, as a receiver, Sampras got a point with something special – a stretched FH volley, and fully controlled the match afterwards (he needed four break points to get the first break of the 2nd set). Lendl never came back to Melbourne as a professional player following that defeat.
