Points won by each set: | 43-38, 43-41, 29-20 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
53 % Krajicek – 61 of 115
46 % Sampras – 46 of 99
Sampras’ first loss after 25 consecutive wins at Wimbledon. It’s arguably the biggest victory in Krajicek’s career. He saved a break point in his opening game, then five break points to lead 2:1 (nine deuces), and the rain came at 2-all. After the rain-break Krajicek was serving like a machine to the end of the contest. He had only one difficult game as he saved a mini-set point at 5-all in the 2nd set with a second serve winner (Sampras thought he had won the game but the ball missed the sideline by a few centimetres). The Dutchman led 5:0* in the tie-break, winning it 7/3. The match was suspended at 1-all in the 3rd set, Krajicek broke at 3-all the following day with perfect passing-shots. His aces by each set: 12-10-7 (or “8” in the 3rd counting his last serve when Sampras just touched the ball).
