    Points won by each set: | 24-10, 41-35, 38-36 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
    30 % Becker – 28 of 91
    26 % Edberg – 25 of 93

The repeat of the ’88 final, in 1989 it lasted 2 hours 11 minutes – shorter than anyone could anticipate because the Swede had won three of their previous four meetings, including an almost 4-hour duel they created a month before in Paris. After the shocking opener, Edberg [3] significantly improved and led *6:5 (40/0) in the 2nd set having won 14 consecutive points on serve! They’ll play their third and last Wimbledon final the following year. Becker [2] had saved three set points also in the 2nd set of his second round match against Matuszewski.

Becker’s route to his 22nd title:
    1 Brian Shelton 6-1, 6-4, 7-6(2)
    2 Richard Matuszewski 6-3, 7-5, 6-4
    3 Jan Gunnarsson 7-5, 7-6(1), 6-3
    4 Aaron Krickstein 6-4, 6-4, 7-5
    Q Paul Chamberlin 6-1, 6-2, 6-0
    S Ivan Lendl 7-5, 6-7(2), 2-6, 6-4, 6-3
    W Stefan Edberg 6-0, 7-6(1), 6-4

    # Becker eight points away from defeat at 4-all in the 4th set vs Lendl
