    Points won by each set: | 31-23, 33-25, 33-26 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
    47 % Sampras – 33 of 69
    25 % Pioline – 26 of 102

Pioline [14] – the last man to play a Grand Slam final using an aluminium racquet (Prince “Magnesium Pro”) which quite interesting because at the end of the 90s actually all the best players were using graphite racquets… His advancement to the final was very unexpected because he hadn’t won an ATP title, but already participated in one big final (Monte Carlo ’93). Nevertheless he managed to defeat in the fourth round Courier, who was the biggest favorite to the title beside Sampras [1], who was usually obtaining plenty of cheap points behind the serve against Pioline, and that ugly final it was one of those cases. The Frenchman was standing on the baseline as a receiver like majority of offensive- baseliners of that era which didn’t help at quick reaction. # They’d play another major final, with very similar scoreline, four years later in London.

Sampras route to his 19th title:
    1 Fabrice Santoro 6-3, 6-1, 6-2
    2 Daniel Vacek 6-4, 5-7, 6-2, 7-6(3)
    3 Arnaud Boetsch 6-4, 6-3, 6-1
    4 Thomas Enqvist 6-4, 6-4, 7-6(4)
    Q Michael Chang 6-7(0), 7-6(2), 6-1, 6-1
    S Alexander Volkov 6-4, 6-3, 6-2
    W Cedric Pioline 6-4, 6-4, 6-3

    # Comparison of their two major finals:
    US Open 1993: Sampras d. Pioline 6-4, 6-4, 6-3… 2 hours 4 minutes… Total points: 97-74
    Wimbledon 1997: Sampras d. Pioline 6-4, 6-2, 6-4… 1 hour 34 minutes… Total points: 89-65

☆ Fastest serves of the event:
204 kph – Sampras, Goellner, Stich
    201 kph – Enqvist

Sampras struck 92 aces en route to the title (10-18-6-18-13-16-11) which means 13.1 aces on average
