Among three best Russian players of the first half of the 90s (Andreis: Cherkasov & Chesnokov), only the nonchalant Volkov reached the semifinal in New York. His way to do that was very tough, and he basically ran out of gas from 3-all in the 2nd set (had an easy put away to level at 4-all). # Sampras & Volkov met thrice on Stadium Court (Centre Court at the time) and the American won easily all those encounters; he was broken once in 1992, but in 1993 & 1996 when the scorelines were almost identical, he didn’t even face a break point (in the ’93 semifinal Volkov took him to ‘deuce’ twice):
Volkov avenged those defeats to some extent in 2000 as he coached Marat Safin when the 20-year-old revelation destroyed Sampras in the final.
