  1. Voo de Mar says:
    Points won by each set: | 32-21, 35-25, 32-20 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
    37 % Sampras – 28 of 74
    26 % Volkov – 24 of 91

Among three best Russian players of the first half of the 90s (Andreys: Cherkasov & Chesnokov), only the nonchalant Volkov reached the semifinal in New York. His way to do that was very tough, and he basically ran out of gas from 3-all in the 2nd set (had an easy put away to level at 4-all). # Sampras & Volkov met thrice on Stadium Court (Centre Court at the time) and the American won easily all those encounters; he was broken once in 1992, but in 1993 & 1996 when the scorelines were almost identical, he didn’t even face a break point (in the ’93 semifinal Volkov took him to ‘deuce’ twice):

    # Comparison of their three US Open matches:
    1992, QF: Sampras d. Volkov 6-4, 6-1, 6-0… 1:39 hours (aces: 7-2)
    1993, SF: Sampras d. Volkov 6-4, 6-3, 6-2… 1:47 hours (aces: 16-8)
    1996, 3R: Sampras d. Volkov 6-3, 6-4, 6-2… 1:29 hours (aces: 19-11)

Volkov avenged those defeats to some extent in 2000 as he coached Marat Safin when the 20-year-old revelation destroyed Sampras in the final.
