Points won by each set: | 30-22, 33-28, 43-34 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
41 % Sampras – 37 of 89
28 % Enqvist – 29 of 101
Two 18-year-old boys claimed their maiden ATP titles in 1992: Medvedev and Enqvist. The former ended the year ranked 24, the latter ranked 63. There were high expectations considering them in 1993, so if Medvedev had advanced to the Top 10, Enqvist would have advanced to the Top 20 according to the natural progress – it didn’t happen though, the 19-year-old Swede was struggling with his form, and in Summer ’93 he almost dropped outside the Top 100. He found his form just before the US Open triumphing in Schenectady (defeated Lendl i.a.) and he supported it in New York reaching the fourth round after sensational eliminating of Agassi in round one. His match against Samrpas was typical for their rivalry which ended at 9-2 for the American. Enqvist [61] used to return inside the court, thus Sampras [1] could always get many cheap points behind the first serve, and penetrate the court on second serve with his powerful forehand. It should have been a perfect 3x 6-4 match with breaks in games no. 9-7-9 in respective sets, but serving to win the contest at 5:4 in the 3rd set, Sampras lost his focus. He quickly regained it in the 7/4 tie-break, converting his third match point.
