  1. Voo de Mar says:
    Points won by each set: | 32-25, 26-15, 31-25 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
    56 % (!) Sampras – 43 of 76
    39 % Pioline – 31 of 78

Second major final between Sampras [1] & Pioline [44], the previous one occurred at the US Open ’93: Sampras won 6-4, 6-4, 6-3 after 2 hours 4 minutes in New York, this time he needed 1 hour 34 minutes displaying phenomenal service performance. Pioline, similarly to Mecir, lost quickly two major finals to the best player of a decade (Mecir to Lendl). En route to the final he defeated only one seeded player (Ferreira in 3R), but in the quarter- (Rusedski) and semi-final (Stich), he was rather an underdog.

Sampras’ route to his 48th title:
    1 Mikael Tillstrom 6-4, 6-4, 6-2
    2 Hendrik Dreekmann 7-6(2), 7-5, 7-5
    3 Byron Black 6-1, 6-2, 6-2
    4 Petr Korda 6-4, 6-3, 6-7(8), 6-7(1), 6-4
    Q Boris Becker 6-1, 6-7(5), 6-1, 6-4
    S Todd Woodbridge 6-2, 6-1, 7-6(3)
    W Cedric Pioline 6-4, 6-2, 6-4

    # Lost his serve just twice in 24 sets (Tillstrom – 1st set, Woodbridge – 3rd set)!
