   Courier’s first win over Sampras in their fourth meeting. Sampras [6] had been playing a lot in Summer ’91, and it seemed that too many matches in a short period cost him too much energy, he looked lethargic against his former doubles partner, especially in return games. He was able to create just one break point (at 2-all in the 3rd set). Even though Courier [5] was holding easily throughout (in the 3rd set he held three games at ‘love’), the fourth set was possible – Sampras played a great point to level at 5-all and facing the second match point (the first at 5:4) he had a good position to make a winning passing-shot but chose a wrong direction and Courier blocked the ball with his forehand volley placing it into an open court. The tie-breaks: 7/4 & 7/5. The first of three matches when Courier wins two straight tie-breaks (another two: Masters ’92 & Aussie Open ’95).
