   Perhaps [1] Courier’s best indoor match ever, and a great revenge for a defeat to Sampras [3] on the same court in the final of the previous Masters edition. Especially Courier’s serve was working tremendously well, he produced his record of aces in a two-setter. In the opener he trailed *4:5 (15/40) when fired an ace followed by a service winner. In the tie-break he was 0:3* when received a code violation for hitting a ball towards a linesman. He argued with an umpire for a minute, and it could distract Sampras’ concentration – he lost four points in a row afterwards. From *4:5 in that TB, Courier won the last three points (15 out of 17 in total then!) and built a 3:0* advantage in the 2nd set. The second tie-break, Courier won 7/4 after Sampras’ forehand error on the first match point.
