    Points won by each set: | 28-25, 33-34, 40-35, 33-38, 32-20 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
    33 % McEnroe – 53 of 158
    17 % Connors – 28 of 160

Their fifth and last mutual five-setter (# not counting Chicago ’82), also a third meeting at majors of 1984 between them – McEnroe [1] demolished his seven years older compatriot [3] in Paris & London. In New York the progress was initially the same – BigMac led 4:1* (hit four aces in the 5th game), but at 4-all he trailed 0/30 when another ace helped him. Connors lost the set, but finally was playing on equal terms. In the 3rd set BigMac came back from *1:3 (0/30) with the help of a bunch of big serves. The deciding break of the match came in the 2nd game of the final set; McEnroe held four times easily, the only problem (BP) he had leading 4:2.

McEnroe & Connors played against each other 34 official matches (20-14 Mac)… at the beginning of 1982 they played an extraordinary final in Chicago (Michelob Light Challenge, an 8-men exhibition) with Connors winning 6-7(9), 7-5, 6-7(3), 7-5, 6-4 after 4 hours 40 minutes, trailing 0:4 in 2nd and *1:4 in 5th set. The match was interrupted a few times due to antics of both, at one juncture Connors crossed the net and began insulting McEnroe standing face-to-face! Connors explained: ‘He’s aggressive, I’m aggressive. We both stick up for our rights. But I stick up for my rights in a different way.’ It was the tightest exho match among many they played against each other… Before Connors & McEnroe, only Smith & Nastase played five 5-setters against each other (Open Era)
