Points won by each set: | 46-47, 23-30, 28-23, 30-19 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
39 % Kyrgios – 47 of 120
32 % Medvedev – 41 of 127
Highly anticipated match since the tournament inception: the title defender Medvedev [1] against the super gifted Kyrgios [25], who finally this year, is committed to work harder off the court, and in the second part of the season (three months thus far) wins more matches than anyone else. The Australian had led *4:2, then 4:1* in the tie-break before the Russian had three set points (6:5 – service winner, *7:6 – BH return winner off the 2nd serve, 8:7 – BH volley winner which barely caught the line). Kyrgios converted his 4th set point to win the breaker 13/11 (the longest Medvedev’s TB thus far) and began the 2nd set deflated allowing Medvedev to lead *5:1 (30/0). Another two sets it was Kyrgios’ concert, however, the beginning of the 3rd set didn’t indicate the sets would be so one-sided. Kyrgios led 1:0 (30-all) in the 3rd set when a point occurred I had never seen before, namely he ran to the opponent’s side to hit a FH volley! He was unaware he couldn’t play the ball from the opponent’s side when it didn’t hit first his side of the court. This silliness didn’t distract him though, and he broke in Medvedev’s another service game despite 40/0 for the Russian. Kyrgios now leads 4:1 in their matches, avenging a defeat at his home major in Melbourne #
Serve & volley: Kyrgios 6/14, Medvedev 0/1
