  1. Voo de Mar says:
    Points won by each set: | 35-28, 51-46, 37-41, 32-20 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
    24 % Federer – 36 of 150
    20 % Hewitt – 28 of 140

A time in their rivalry when Federer [1] was defeating Hewitt [4] regularly, and easily. It was Federer’s 9th straight victory over his peer, and the third one ‘3-1’ in sets, but Hewitt played the best match among those three four-setters. The Australian drew conclusions from their previous major semifinal – in the 2nd set there, he had begun playing aggressively, making the things quite balanced. Hewitt applied this strategy from the beginning of the US Open semifinal. Federer needed ‘deuces’ in three service games of the opener. In the 2nd set he saved five set points on serve (15/40 at 4:5 and 5:6); the second and fifth were impressive because he finished 21- and 13-stroke rallies with forehand winners. The discouraged Hewitt lost the tie-break 0/7, but he somehow didn’t fall apart in the 3rd set. He held after 9 deuces his first service game, and got a break at 3-all. Three competitive sets against Federer, cost Hewitt too much, and the 4th set turned into a one-way affair, so characteristic for the majority of their sets in the years 2004-07 when the Swiss overwhelmed his peer in each department actually.

    Serve & volley: Federer 4/8, Hewitt 0
