  1. Voo de Mar says:
    Points won by each set: | 30-26, 32-27 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
    47 % Becker – 26 of 55
    30 % Sampras – 18 of 60

The beginning of the biggest rivalry in the 90s as far as fast surfaces are concerned. They will play against each other a Wimbledon (quarter- semi-)final as well as finals of all biggest events indoors (Stuttgart, Paris & “Masters” at two different venues). In their first meeting Sampras [5] was already a major champion, but still before his physical maturity, not able to constantly serve with full speed his 1st serves and the scoreline reflected it – Becker [2] got breaks at 2-all in 1st & 4-all in 2nd set. The German withstood a double break point serving to close the opener out. Apart from that, he held nine times without any troubles. “The difference between Boris and myself is that when it comes to crunch time, to a break point, he’s going to get his first serve in at 120 m.p.h. while I’m going to miss it,” Sampras said. “That’s what happened in the first set when I double-faulted on a break point. That cost me the set. He’s more experienced. He’s been in these situations much more.” Becker stated, underestimating his four years younger opponent: “Sampras is a good player. He has nice strokes and a good serve. He has the potential to be there for more than just a year. But he still has a way to go.”
