Points won by each set: | 23-26, 47-43, 30-25 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
43 % Sampras – 39 of 89
26 % Agassi – 28 of 105
The second chapter (first at Paris-Bercy) of a fascinating ten-month period off long-time rivalry between Sampras & Agassi for the pinnacle of men’s tennis. Between November ’94 and September ’95 they faced each other seven times (Agassi edged 4:3) with a climax at the US Open ’95… The pivotal moment of the Frankfurt semifinal occurred in the 12th game of the 2nd set. Rudi Berger made an incorrect (and actually silly) decision to overrule linesman’s silence on the “far line” in Sampras’ favour, awarding him a double set point. Admittedly Agassi won that game, but lost his temper (he was three points away from victory improving from 3:6 to 5:6* in the 5/7 tie-break), and after the 2nd set which was finished on the sixth set point, he needed three games to mentally recover, receiving a point penalty in the meantime. Agassi somehow avoided a double break disadvantage, but Sampras held firmly a couple of times, adding another break on his second match point.
