   26 % Sampras – 30 of 117
   19 % Courier – 27 of 141

   It was very telling match, but in retrospect… The years 1991-92 marked Courier’s dominance in men’s tennis, however, in that particular match the lower ranked [2 vs 7] and one year younger Sampras simply showed he’s a better, more versatile player. Everyone knew he was a better server & volleyer too, but in that final he also hit more ground-stroke winners and twice as many as Courier from a relatively weaker backhand side! Therefore I would say no-one could have an impression that Courier lost because he had a bad day – he played his best – not enough for Sampras in the zone. Of course Sampras’ specialty – the tie-break – played a crucial part. Even though Sampras double faulted twice in the tie-break, losing comfortable 5:1 & 6:4 advantages, he didn’t make a return mistake on his second set point and Courier netted an easy forehand. It helped Sampras to play in sets Nos. 3 & 4 whatever he wanted and his supremacy was quite overwhelming.
