Points won by each set: | 41-43, 34-27, 32-25, 33-28 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
34 % Sampras – 45 of 129
25 % Chang – 34 of 134
Chang [6] had been amazingly serving until 3-all in the 2nd set when Sampras [1] reeled off seven straight games. The defending champion already led 5:1* (40/30) in the 3rd set when Chang came back to his strong disposition leading 40/15 in Sampras’ two opening service games of the 4th set. Sampras broke in the 5th game though, and held thrice being visibly tired & concentrated only on his own serve – it was his third consecutive more than 3-hour match (lost in them 4 of 5 sets in tie-breaks!), in each of them he was losing the opener, in two of them trailed 0-2 in sets: Larsson (3:07 hrs), Courier (3:59 hrs), Chang (3:11 hrs)… The Chinese American was rarely hitting more than 10 aces in a match, that time he served his career-high 20 aces…
