Important event in the development of Pioline [25]. The Frenchman was naturally an offensive baseline player, but in the 90s still majority of offensive baseliners was implementing serve-and-volley tactics on grass. Prior Wimbledon ’93, Pioline had a modest experience on that surface, but during the tournament he won four consecutive matches attacking the net behind his all serves & played a competitive three-setter against the best (along with Becker) grass-court player at the time. In the 2nd set Pioline led 4:0* & 5:3, but serving for the set was broken at 15 – Edberg [3] stroke two fantastic backhand passing-shots in that game and finished the contest with an ace (he missed FH-volley on the first MP in the most spectacular rally).
