Points won by each set: | 31-18, 33-28 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
43 % Agassi – 24 of 55
27 % Korda – 15 of 55
Agassi [6] defended his title and like a year before he didn’t even lose a set in the process (in 1990 his route was more difficult though). In the quick final the breaks of serve were required at 3:2 in 1st set and 2-all in 2nd… A breakthrough period in career of the 23-year-old Korda. He had no chance in that final, couldn’t deal with Agassi’s serve, but the following week in a bigger event (Canadian Open) he sensationally avenged the loss, defeating Agassi 7-6, 6-2 in 2R; he reached the final and a few weeks later he gained his maiden title in New Haven – thanks to those results within 1.5 months he jumped from no. 69 to 15 and finished the season as a Top 10 player.
Agassi’s route to his 14th title:
2 David Pate 6-4, 6-3
3 Chuck Adams 6-2, 6-2
Q Johan Carlsson 7-5, 6-2
S Jaime Yzaga 6-3, 6-2
W Petr Korda 6-3, 6-4
