   # Almost a copy of their US Open quarter-final played in the previous month. In both matches Sampras [1] won the 1st & 3rd sets easily, while in the middle sets of those matches he allowed Kucera [7] to be within a game from stealing the set – closer in Vienna as he trailed 5:6 (30-all) on his second serve. Sampras was awesome at the beginning of the final in the Austrian capital – he led 6-3 2:0* (deuce) having already served 9 of his 13 aces. In the 3rd set he broke at 2:1 after seven deuces. Sampras appeared in Austria for the first time in his career with a goatee.
