   A 3-hour match, their third at the US Open (following 1991 QF and 1992 SF)… Sampras [2] fired 9 of 26 aces in his first three service games of the 2nd set (!), in which he led 4:3* (deuce). In each set that Courier [15] lost, he was two games away, the closest in the opener as he blew two break points at 4-all. At the end of each set Sampras delivered something special with his forehand at crucial moments: dead net-cord on set point at 6:5* in 1st, fantastic FH cross during fast baseline rally to get a set point at 5:4* in 3rd and firm forehand passing-shot on his first match point. The 25-year-old Courier won’t play another semifinal in a Grand Slam event.
