   The 20-year-old McEnroe [3] advanced to his first major final defeating a player who’d reached the US Open finals in five consecutive years! McEnroe already led *5:1 (30-all) in the opening set, then saved a double break point at 5:3. In the 3rd set he was broken serving for the match at 5:3, Connors [2] wasted a break point at 5-all & the match was over after just 1 hour 55 minutes. Prior to that meeting, Connors led 6-2 in their H2H series, having won both their major matches (semifinals: Wimbledon ’77 & US Open ’78).
