Points won directly behind the serve:

    25 % Agassi – 30 of 116

The two biggest rivals in the mid 90s, Sampras & Agassi met in five finals of 1995 (Agassi 3-2). Sampras – defeating Agassi in the US Open ’95 final – snapped his 26 match winning streak – the best in Agassi’s career (titles in: Washington, Montreal, Cincinnati & New Haven), and replaced him as the best player in the world. In the 4th set, Sampras struck eleven aces (4 aces in a row in game No. 6). The crucial was a set point of the opener, they were involved in an exhilarating 22-stroke baseline rally and Sampras finished it with a backhand winner. Quite similar match Sampras played in the semifinal against the fellow American and one of his toughest rivals a few years earlier – Courier. ”Pete’s won two Slams, so I’d have to say that come Dec. 31st, he’s gonna feel better about the year than I will,” said Agassi – that loss discouraged him to play in the 4th quarter of the season. The most exciting period of their rivalry which lasted 15 months being stretched over three seasons, is stopped in the San Jose ’96 final – each of them gathered four wins during that span.

Sampras’ route to his 35th title:
    1 Fernando Meligeni 6-0, 6-3, 6-4
    2 Jaime Yzaga 6-1, 6-4, 6-3
    3 Mark Philippoussis 6-7(5), 7-5, 7-5, 6-3
    4 Todd Martin 7-6(4), 6-3, 6-4
    Q Byron Black 7-6(3), 6-4, 6-0
    S Jim Courier 7-5, 6-4, 4-6, 7-5
    W Andre Agassi 6-4, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5
