   One of the most unexpected Grand Slam semifinals in history – never before a Brazilian and a Belgian went so far, and all of a sudden one of them would be the finalist. The 21-year-old Kuerten [66] had much impressive route to the semifinal, and confirmed his unbelievable form especially in the 50 minutes of that 1/2-final encounter – he already led 6-1 3:1* (30/15) when his four years older “carelessly playing” opponent got five straight games, all involving ‘deuces’. In the 4th set the Belgian [122], who had played the qualifying event, came back from *3:5 (30-all) to lead 3:1 and 4:3 in the tie-break – then his favorite forehand let him down: two simple errors, unsuccessful passing-shot (Kuerten’s volley winner) and another casual mistake off his forehand on the first match point ended the 2-hour 14-minute meeting… At 0:1 in the 2nd set, Kuerten struck four aces within five points!

   Dewulf, the first French Open semifinalist as a qualifier, before entering the event he defeated:
   1R – Pescosolido 6-4, 6-4
   2R – Buscaglione 4-6, 6-2, 6-3
   3R – Chauvin 6-3, 6-4
