One of the most unexpected Grand Slam semifinals in history. The 21-year-old Kuerten [66] had much impressive route to the semifinal and confirmed his unbelievable form especially in the 50 minutes of that encounter – he already led 6-1 3:1* (30/15) when his four years older “carelessly playing” opponent got five straight games, all involving ‘deuces’. In the 4th set the Belgian [122] came back from *3:5 (30-all) to lead 3:1 & 4:3 in the tie-break – then his favorite forehand let him down: two simple errors, unsuccessful passing-shot (Kuerten’s volley winner) and another forehand casual mistake on the first match point ended the 2-hour 14-minute meeting… At 0:1 in the 2nd set, Kuerten struck four aces within five points!
