It was the most anticipated fourth round match that year in Paris, it’s also very interesting in retrospect because the double defending champion Courier [2] faced the champion of 1995 – Muster [16], who was almost unbeaten on clay in the years 1995-96. The two clay-court giants had faced each other also in the second round a year before, Courier won it with surprising ease, in 1993 he needed to work much harder. There were five breaks of serve in the crucial 3rd set (the last gave Courier *4:3 edge). Courier generally knew how to play against Muster. The American lost their first two matches as a teenager, then defeated the Austrian seven straight times, never being close to defeat (Muster won their last three matches).
