Points won by each set: [ 42-40, 30-15, 31-28 ]
Points won directly behind the serve:
15 % Connors – 15 of 96
13 % Sundstrom – 13 of 90
The 20-year-old Henrik Sundstrom [13] was the hottest clay-court player in 1984. He entered that quarterfinal (his only appearance in 1/4 final of a major) having a great 26-4 record on clay that year, including two wins over his compatriot, the best clay-court player at the time – Mats Wilander. The 32-year-old Jimmy Connors [3] wanted to add the French Open title to his collection, and everything went according to the best possible scenario for him – he took the equal opening set, then at the beginning of 2nd he had an exchange of words with the young Swede (disputing a line call), and perhaps that situation cost Sundstrom the set because of mental distraction. In the 3rd set, a decided break for Connors came at 2-all when Sundstrom committed a double fault.
