Points won by each set: | 29-12, 31-34, 27-16, 23-28, 30-19 |
Points won directly on serve:
15 % Borg – 20 of 130
10 % Lendl – 12 of 119
Borg wins the French Open for the sixth and last time (1974-75, 1978-81). He is only 25 but never plays in Paris again… Just like in the years 1978 & 80, Borg was relatively close to win the event demolishing all opponents; on the assumption he could have beaten Lendl “6-1, 6-4, 6-2”, it would have been en route to the title with just 46 games dropped, but in the 2nd set at 4-all Lendl got three straight games, the last one of the 2nd set after the longest game of the final (six deuces, Lendl needed five set points)… The Swede began the 5th game of the match on serve with three punishing points (60-24-46-stroke rallies respectively; first marathon point lost, another two he won). Borg leading 4:0 (15-all) in the decider lost his racket after the serve…
Borg’ route to his 62nd title:
1 Jose Lopez-Maeso 6-2, 6-2, 6-2
2 Cassio Motta 6-1, 7-5, 6-0
3 Paul Torre 6-2, 6-1, 6-2
4 Terry Moor 6-0, 6-0, 6-1
Q Balazs Taroczy 6-3, 6-3, 6-2
S Victor Pecci 6-4, 6-4, 7-5
W Ivan Lendl 6-1, 4-6, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1
