Points won by each set: | 32-27, 36-30, 42-35 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
8 % Borg – 9 of 104
11 % Pecci – 11 of 98
Pecci [18] entered the semifinal in quite confident mood having sensationally defeated Borg in their previous match (Monte Carlo ’81). He was playing aggressive tennis, his net-coverage was awesome, but Borg [1] was just too solid with his ground-strokes. In the 3rd set it seemed that their French Open ’79 final would be somehow repeated because the Swede had lost then a set leading 2-0. Pecci was serving at 5:3, but he was unable to convert a set point in that game (Borg’s forehand passing shot) and another one in the following game.
