   Strange beginning, Safin [7] sprained his ankle already in the 2nd game, thankfully it wasn’t serious and he established a 4:1 lead. In the 2nd set he saved a break point with a service winner trailing 2:4 (30/40). Canas [14] was furious in the tie-break, he thought he was harmed twice. The first case seemed problematic as Safin played a backhand winner in the intersection of sideline & baseline to lead 5:3. The ball could have been good or not, tough to say, but at 5-all the ball was certainly good when the same linesman (who was previously silent), that time wrongly called it out – Canas played a forehand right afterwards which could be a winner because Safin stopped to play (possibly affecting the linesman’s decision), but the ball was far away from his reach. Instead of a set point for the Argentinian, the point was repeated and Safin won it, as well as another point – his first match point.
