  1. Voo de Mar says:
    Points won by each set: | 47-40, 28-16, 26-20 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
    39 % McEnroe – 35 of 89
    25 % Lendl – 22 of 88

“I would say that he played very well,” Lendl said. “Unfortunately, I’ve seen him play very well many times. I was serving well and eventually you’ll feel pressure when you can’t break the other guy’s serve. Then you’ll feel pressure to hold your own serve. He’s very talented. He has great reflexes. And even when you find something that works against him, you have to change it because he will come up with something else.” The Masters ’84 was held in January ’85. The $100,000 first prize put McEnroe’s 1984 earnings at $2,026,109. He finished that year with an outstanding 82-3 record. ”You can’t compare me to someone who played 50 years ago,” BigMac said. ”When people say I’m the best, it’s nice, but I just let the way I play speak for itself. I don’t need some person to tell me what they think.” In the final there was the only bagel set in 36 meetings between McEnroe & Lendl, Big Mac won eleven games in a row (from *4:5 in 1st to 2:0* in 3rd), but in the bagel set the point-difference was the lowest possible for such a set (12). # It was the third (and last) ‘Masters’ final between these two great champions.

McEnroe’s route to his 59th title:
    Q Anders Jarryd 2-6, 6-4, 6-2
    S Mats Wilander 6-1, 6-1
    W Ivan Lendl 7-5, 6-0, 6-4

McEnroe began his Masters ’84 campaign with a 2-6, *0:3 deficit against Jarryd (had similar problems against the Swede a few weeks earlier in Stockholm…. 1-6, 7-6, 6-2), losing seven games in a row and facing a break point to lose the eighth! In the meantime, at one of his serves he lost the head of his racquet (it’d already been damaged) and only a grip left in his hand 🙂

    # Comparison of their three consecutive Masters finals:
    1982: Lendl d. McEnroe 6-4, 6-4, 6-2… 2 hours 5 minutes… Total points: 96-75 (171)… Breaks of serve – 4
    1983: McEnroe d. Lendl 6-3, 6-4, 6-4… 1 hour 50 minutes… Total points: 90-74 (164)… Breaks of serve – 3
    1984: McEnroe d. Lendl 7-5, 6-0, 6-4… 1 hour 51 minutes… Total points: 101-76 (177)… Breaks of serve – 5
