   It was their third final in the 1977 season, however, it was played in January ’78. Connors took a revenge on two previous defeats – Wimbledon & Pepsi Grand Slam. He was trailing *0:2 (30-all) in the deciding set, there was 4-all later on. The 1977 year featured very intriguing rivalry between them & Vilas. Connors asked during the ceremony “who’s the best?” replied: “Well, Vilas beat me, Borg beat Vilas, and I beat Borg, so let’s play it all over again.” He added: “I don’t think you’ll see any better tennis from me. It’s certainly the best I can play.” Nevertheless he played even better against Borg in the US Open ’78 final.

   Connors’ route to his only ‘Masters’ title:

   rr Guillermo Vilas 4-6, 6-3, 5-7

   Connors didn’t participate in the event in years 1974-76 even though he was the best player in the world in those years…
