Points won by each set: | 19-14, 19-13, 17-11 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
32 % Sinner – 17 of 52
19 % De Minaur – 8 of 41
As many as three players withdrew from the event: Tsitsipas [7], Auger [19] and Shapovalov [28]. The first one because he had guaranteed a birth in the season-ending championship (and he won it!), whereas the Canadians had some physical issues and preferred not to risk anything before the first edition of the Davis Cup finals in a new format, and it was a good decision, especially in Shapovalov’s case – he played big role in Canada’s advancement to the final… The 18-year-old Sinner was a ‘wild card’ and contrary to his compatriots from two previous editions (Quinzi & Caruna), he not only became the first Italian to advance to the semifinals, he also won the entire event not giving any chance two years older, and much higher ranked De Minaur in the final. Sinner overwhlemed his final opponent with more mature baseline game, and also his serve was crucial in deciding moments. He won four games facing double break poin three timers, and a triple break point once, placing his first serve in the service boxes with consistency. “I don’t have words,” Sinner said. “The week has been unbelievable. The crowd… You can hear them now. I’m very happy… I wouldn’t be here without the wild card, so thanks to everyone. I hope to be back here next year.”
