   First hard-court semifinal of the 21-year-old Ulihrach [39]… Sampras could win the final easier, he led 3:0* in the 1st & 5:3* (30/15) in the 2nd set; at 5-all Ivanisevic [7] committed two double faults, the second one facing a break point. “Whenever you win it brings you a lot of confidence and that is one thing I was looking for here, going into Flushing [U.S. Open],” Sampras said. “I feel fit and ready to go.” The American captured the US Open title that year, having defeated Ivanisevic in the semifinal.
