  1. Voo de Mar says:
    Points won by each set: [ 41-37, 35-28 ]
Points won directly behind the serve:
    33 % Courier – 23 of 69
    37 % Becker – 27 of 72

Thanks to that tournament Courier [2] came back to the top spot in men’s tennis for a short time – then it couldn’t be obvious that Sampras would be a king of tennis in upcoming years because he suffered a temporary crisis after his first Wimbledon title (“only” 9-4 record between two majors ’93). Courier, who had lost his first six meetings to Becker [3], in the Indianapolis final luckily survived the opener – he saved four mini-set points (three at 4-all, another one at 5-all), thrice with the help of passing-shots; on two occasions it seemed he was in too difficult position on the court to fight them off. In the 2nd set decided a break at 4:3 for him, after three deuces.

Courier’s route to his 14th title:
    2 Jaime Oncins 6-3, 6-2
    3 Tomas Carbonell 6-2, 6-1
    Q Cedric Pioline 6-3, 6-4
    S Luiz Mattar 6-3, 6-2
    W Boris Becker 7-5, 6-3
