  1. Voo de Mar says:
    Points won by each set: [ 31-23, 14-27, 30-20, 35-27 ]
    Points won directly on serve:
    40 % Martin – 42 of 104
    15 % Berasategui – 16 of 103

Clay it was [65] Martin’s worst surface, yet he won his arguably biggest title in difficult conditions for himself, after a two-year break from the previous title, and he did it shortly after returning on the tour from an eight-month break. What’s more astonishing, he convincingly defeated in Barcelona six players who could say “clay is my fave surface”. Martin – as opposed to other big servers – had a very stable backhand, and simply that week this particular shot was on the money. Martin became the first US player to get a Barcelona title since Herbert Flam in 1957. The tall American played five times against Berasategui [16] never losing to him, it was their match no. three. The following year they meet again on the same court (in the quarterfinal) and Martin wins 3-6, 7-5, 6-3.

Martin’s route to his 6th title:
    1 Richard Fromberg 6-2, 6-4
    2 Thomas Muster 6-4, 7-6(4)
    3 Slava Dosedel 6-3, 7-5
    Q Carlos Costa 6-2, 6-4
    S Andrea Gaudenzi 6-4, 7-6(5)
    W Alberto Berasategui 6-2, 1-6, 6-3, 6-2
