  1. Voo de Mar says:
    Points won by each set: | 52-45, 20-29, 40-39, 30-19 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
    40 % Stich – 53 of 130
    25 % Sampras – 37 of 144

Stich [3] became the first ‘Masters’ champion to win all five matches since 1987, after the final lasting 2 hours 57 minutes. In the 1st set he already led *5:2 (40/15), only to be four points away from losing the set at *5:6. In the crucial 3rd set, there was no break of serve, and the German converted his third set point. In the 4th set, he served 12 of his 27 aces, including 7 in a row! “It’s disappointing,” Sampras said, having lost to Stich similar match a year before in Munich. “I obviously had a great year and I can hold my head up high.” Stich is barely 1 out of 3 players to be proud of having a positive record against Sampras [1] defeating him at least 5 times, two others: Richard Krajicek (6-4) & Lleyton Hewitt (5-4)… Stich vs. Sampras (5-4)

Stich’s route to his 13th title:
    rr Andrei Medvedev 6-3, 6-4
    rr Michael Chang 4-6, 7-6(4), 6-2
    rr Jim Courier 7-5, 6-4
    S Goran Ivanisevic 7-6(2), 7-6(10)
    W Pete Sampras 7-6(3), 2-6, 7-6(7), 6-2

    # Stich was serving twice to stay in the match vs Chang (it lasted 2 hours 32 minutes)
