Points won by each set: | 35-25, 29-16, 13-24, 21-29, 60-59 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
31 % Hewitt – 50 of 157… 24 % Nalbandian – 38 of 154
Winners by percentage:
31 % Hewitt – 49 of 158… 24 % Nalbandian – 37 of 153
Lleyton Hewitt has played plenty of five-setters (57) in his long career (more experienced only Ivan Lendl – 58), but he has never entered a 5th set tie-break which is bizarre, especially taking into account he played 14 times in a formula allowing to do that. The Australian went only thrice beyond 5-all in the decider, and twice it happened against David Nalbandian…
In their first five-set meeting that lasted 4 hours 5 minutes, the opening set was dictated by the serve (No. 3 Hewitt fired half of his aces in the 1st set!), but there was a lot of stretching & running in the following four sets; grueling rallies (the longest: 39-stroke rally at the end of the 4th set) with all types of shots were demonstrated. Only one break of serve decided the final outcome, but before it happened the Argentine [9] had put himself four times in an optimistic position to get the crucial break – 4:3 (30/0), 6:5 (30-all), 7:6 (30-all) & 8:7 (30/15). He will take a revenge on the same court (different color though) six years later, surviving 9-7 in the 5th set having saved two match points.
