  1. Voo de Mar says:
    Points won by each set: | 41-40, 39-44, 38-31 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
    18 % Bruguera – 23 of 126
    25 % Edberg – 27 of 107

It was like an informal semifinal because the winner of the Spain-Sweden match would go to the World Team Cup final. Actually Edberg’s last clay-court ‘best of three’ match at this high level of play, Bruguera [6] was the best clay-courter then, between his two French Open triumphs, so looking in retrospect Edberg [3] played very well, even though he lost that 2-hour 26-minute encounter. He had a set point in the 10th game of the no-break opener, but netted forehand off Bruguera’s second serve. In the 2nd set the Spaniard didn’t convert a triple mini-match point at 4:3, but creating it, he stumbled, his hands were dirty & he lost his rhythm. There were as many as five breaks in the decider when the rains was heavier falling. At the end, Edberg [3], who was attacking the net as a receiver constantly, lost two vital points when he was playing overheads. Nonetheless he had a chance to make the 6th break of the set…. In the second rubber, C.Costa defeated Apell who replaced Gustafsson and Spain moved to the final where was defeated by Germany.
