Almost pure serve-and-volley two-day duel on Centre Court between the two excellent juniors of the 80s: the 23-year-old Edberg [3], already established as a great player, and 18-year-old qualifier Woodbridge [244] – a youngster who aspired to be someone like Edberg. The underdog deserved to play a five-setter, he won more points in total, led 3:0* (30/15) in the opener and there was 5-all in the tie-break when the defending champion played quite lucky forehand return winner and converted his first match point with a firm volley. The 3rd set was strange because it was close to 9 pm, so the latest possible hour to play, Edberg wanted to stop already as he led 2-0 in sets and he actually lost his focus to drop the set on purpose, like he didn’t want to have the match suspended at 2:3 or 3:4… In the first round, Woodbridge had defeated his peer, the future 7-time champion of the event – [86] Pete Sampras 7-5, 7-6(5), 5-7, 6-3. After losing to Edberg, the Australian played in the junior event reaching the final.
