It was great opportunity for Leconte [12] to even win the event. He knew how to play against Lendl (5:6 in their H2H at the time), and won more points in two tie-break sets he lost (5/7 & 6/8) which is rather unusual, having his chances in them both; he led 5:4* (30/0) in the 1st set, also 3:1, 5:4* in the tie-break and 5:4 (deuce) in the 3rd set; at 6-all in the tie-break he missed an easy FH volley. The only break of the match occurred in the 2nd game of the 2nd set.
