Points won by each set: | 34-26, 31-25 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
31 % Noah – 16 of 51
12 % Jaite – 8 of 65
The 20-year-old Martin Jaite [27] enjoyed arguably the best period in his career: after sensational quarter-final at Roland Garros, he obtained two back-to-back finals of big tournaments on American green clay-courts (Boston, Washington). In both finals he couldn’t do too much against clay-court specialists: Mats Wilander & Noah, however, he started promisingly facing the Frenchman [10], leading 4:1 with one break of serve – Noah reeled off seven straight games though. Noah said: “I couldn’t have started any slower. Then I decided to play higher balls, calm down and play from the baseline, coming in only on the short balls.”
Noah’s route to his 16th title:
2 Mikael Pernfors 7-6(3), 6-4
3 John Ross 6-2, 7-5
Q Aaron Krickstein 6-2, 6-4
S Jimmy Connors 6-4, 3-6, 6-2
W Martin Jaite 6-4, 6-3
