46 % Karlovic – 49 of 105
With that title, Monfils turned a bit the tables of his ATP finals. Prior to Washington he had a terrible 5-19 record and his 20th lost final hung in the air as Karlovic [35] broke at 4-all in the 2nd set. The Croat hadn’t lost his serve throughout the week so Monfils [17] seemed done. Even though Karlovic finished the match with his pretty stable 61% of first serves in, trying to serve the title out he dropped to 37% (3 out of 8); admittedly he came back from 0/40 in a good style, but at ‘deuce’ his stop-volley was too high and Monfils got the point hitting Karlovic’s body. Despite wasted a huge opportunity, Dr. Ivo had another chance at 6:5* in the tie-break – Monfils delivered an intelligent serve (186 kph) to Karlovic’s backhand and forced an error. On Monfils’ first set point, Karlovic netted his forehand at the net – it was the only mini-break in the tie-break. The only break of the 3rd set came at 1-all. “I was serving better in the first two sets,” said Karlovic. “I don’t know why, but my serve stopped [when serving for the match]. It happens I guess. I’m not used to that. I was going to win and I lost my serve. That is tennis. Of course, every match you have a little bit of pressure. I’ve dealt with that in many matches and usually I’m able to get over it. Today I couldn’t. But it was a great week.” Karlovic’s 15th MP-up defeat at the main-level.
