Historic moment for the Slovenian tennis as Zemlja [70] becomes the first Slovene to reach an ATP final. His advancement to the final was totally unexpected because he was 26 years-old, known as a Challenger player, without any ATP quarterfinal. He went through two qualifying rounds, and came back from 3:5 in the deciding tie-break against Malisse. In the semifinal he trailed 3-6, *1:3 vs Tipsarevic (three points away from defeat in the 2nd set tie-break at 2:4). In the final he’d been playing very well (flat ground-strokes from both wings) against Del Potro [8] until he wasted three mini-set points at 4-all… Zemlja remained a player of one tournament to the end of his career five years later.
Del Potro’s route to his 12th title:
2 Daniel Brands 6-7(5), 7-6(4), 7-6(6)
Q Marinko Matosevic 6-2, 6-2
S Gilles Muller 7-6(4), 7-6(5)
W Grega Zemlja 7-5, 6-3
# Del Potro saved a triple mini-match point vs Brands [111] at 4-all in the 2nd set, and trailed *4:5 in the deciding tie-break, he fired 30 aces – his record in the “best of three” match (33 in the “best of five”)
