The 39-year-old Connors [174] played his 31st and last Grand Slam semifinal (the oldest major semifinalist since 1974), in which an 18 year-difference-gap between the competitors was huge in terms of their vitality. Connors gave his all as usual, but after very tough road to the semifinal, he had gas in the tank only for 65 minutes – since he led *3:1 in the 2nd set, he lost 11 out of the next 13 games, not being able to hold once. Courier [5] didn’t need to play anything special except one point at the end of the match – he was just keeping a moderate pace of ground-strokes preventing from Connors’ attacks to the net, and serving well throughout the 2-hour 5-minute contest. The younger American advanced to his lone US Open final not dropping a set!
