3 hours 15 minutes of an ugly, windy match between two young Swedes: 23-year-old Wilander [3] and two years younger Edberg [2] – the first of their three major semifinals (another two in Melbourne). Edberg, who had easily won five sets of their two previous encounters, started the semifinal with 40/0 on serve but soon found himself 0:4. There were two marathon games (very unusual in a match) that decided the final outcome:
– 3rd set: 11 deuces & Wilander breaks for 2:0 (Edberg had just 2 game points)
– 4th set: 10 deuces & Wilander holds for 4:2 (Edberg had 5 break points)
