Points won by each set: [ 21-27, 42-35, 37-33, 28-15 ]
Points won directly behind the serve:
34 % Wawrinka – 40 of 116
16 % Nishikori – 20 of 122
Nishikori [7] was playing the entire match in much more offensive attitude than usual, applying serve-and-volley tactics often, like he knew that only short points, and in the consequence not too long match could hive him victory. Actually he played well for only two hours, anyway I can imagine he could have won this match under three hours in straight sets if he had converted his chances in the 2nd set – he led 2:0*, then at 3-all he squandered a triple break point, and two mini set points at 4-all. The 3rd set was similarly dramatic – Wawrinka [3] already led 4:1* (40/15), but fought off another mini set point at 4-all (the match was halted for seven minutes at 4:3 when the roof had to be closed due to rain). Nishikori broke back in the 4th set too, but he was physically too weak to turn the things around. Wawrinka advances to his first US Open final in the third semifinal attempt (lost to Djokovic in 2013 & to Federer a year ago).
