   Points won directly behind the serve:
   47 % Sampras – 50 of 106 (14 aces in the 2nd set!)
   25 % Schalken – 29 of 114

   The 2-hour 24-minute match. Schalken had his chances in the opening two sets (no breaks of serve, the Dutchman lost 6/8 & 4/7 the tie-breaks): he improved from 0:4 to *5:4 in the 1st tie-break, then squandered a set point (Sampras’ BH-volley winner); in the 2nd set Schalken was two points away from the set leading 30/15 in games Nos. 10 & 12. The only break points came for him in the 3rd set. Sampras’ next to the last match and his last two tie-breaks – record 328-194 that seemed impossible to overcome at the time; Federer will have won more tie-breaks during the Australian Open 2013…
